It’s been called the “second heart” or “peripheral heart,” and it is crucial to your energy, your recovery, and your long-term vascular health.
The Science of ‘Flow’: Fighting Gravity
Your body has a brilliant circulatory loop. Your arteries take blood down to your legs with help from gravity. The challenge is getting that deoxygenated blood back up to your chest, against gravity, from the furthest point of your body.
If your system relied solely on the pressure from your chest and heart, blood would struggle to return efficiently, leading to pooling, swelling (oedema), and fatigue.
Enter the Calf Muscle Pump.
This system is made up of three key components:
- The Chamber: The deep veins in your lower leg.

Unlike the gastrocnemius, which is great for explosive power (jumping, sprinting), the soleus is composed primarily of slow-twitch (Type I) muscle fibres.
